About this deal

These are some of the most common generic acoustic guitar string gauges. There will likely be some variation between brands, and some brands produce hybrid sets, but follow this as a general guide and you’ll never be far off the money. Unfortunately, this comes at the expense of slightly reduced brightness and sustain and a higher cost. The higher cost can be offset by the longer string life but to some the tone of coated strings does not have enough punch. Rather than being labeled as “light” or “heavy,” classical guitar strings are classified as having low, medium, or high tension. Find out more about how we test music gear and servicesat MusicRadar. Find the right strings for you While your instrument might have its own quirks that influence your choice of string, so too will your playing style, and how the strings feel and sound to you is the most important thing. This, after all, is about the business of playing music, and there is no received wisdom that overrules what your hand and ear are telling you. What are nylon strings made of?

The debate between light and heavy gauge strings is one that has been around for many years, with no clear consensus emerging. So, which is better? Coated guitar strings are strings that have a coating on them. This coating helps to protect the string from the elements and from wear and tear. It also helps to keep the string from rusting or tarnishing.

Since flatwound strings wind a flat wire around the string core they feel much smoother than roundwound strings and the player can easily glide across them. However, many players may find them too slippery, and they are harder to grip for bending. Low tension strings tend to have a more balanced sound and less stiffness but will not project as well. Round core strings have a round wire core and are usually still wound by hand. They are a bit harder to find than hex core strings, but some players prefer the sound of round core strings. A dull, lifeless tone could help to achieve a gloomy atmosphere that may serve a specific purpose. Who knows?

Unfortunately, the coarse winding will lead to more string noise (which may actually be a good thing for aggressive musical styles) and slightly more wear on the frets. Flatwound In a set of classical strings, the top three strings are made from clear or rectified nylon, with the bottom three typically using bronze or silver-plated copper wire wrapped around a multi-filament core. You’ll only need nylon (sometimes known as ‘classical’) strings if you’ve got a classical guitar - and it’s important that you don’t get mixed up between nylon and steel strings. The difference in string tension means that if you put steel strings on a classical guitar, you run the risk of seriously damaging your instrument. How we choose the best acoustic guitar strings In ye olden times, guitar strings were fashioned out of animal guts. You might have heard of the so-called ‘catgut strings’? Well, those were ubiquitous for guitar players until the early 1900s. Knowing when to restring your acoustic guitar largely depends on how much you play your acoustic guitar, but as a rule, we recommend you restring your acoustic guitar every couple of months at the very least. This will keep your instrument feeling and sounding it's very best. If you use coated strings, you might get some extra life out of them - but once your strings start to sound and look dull, it’s time for a change. What are acoustic guitar strings made of? Even if you don’t happen to have a problem playing on dead strings, you are most likely going to experience problems with tuning. When you play strings for a long period of time, the strings wear down as they mash against the frets of the guitar. Each material has its own timbre. Bronze sounds bright, with bell-like clarity and a wide treble-forward frequency response. As the name suggests, phosphor bronze sees phosphor added to the alloy to slow oxidation and extend string life. Phosphor bronze strings tend to sound a little darker and warmer than bronze. Long story short, yes they are. Nylon guitar strings are referred to as having high or low tension, with high-tension strings offering a heavier feel and low tension an easier-to-play feel. Even ‘high’ tension strings have less tension than a steel or bronze set - and it’s one of the main reasons why so many people start on a nylon string classical guitar. Make sure that the head of your guitar isn’t touching anything, as this will ensure that your tuning pegs don’t become damaged in the cleaning process. This correlation between the string gauge and tension is worth bearing in mind when considering how gauges affect the guitar’s tone and the instrument’s playability.
