About this deal

At that point, iPhone users can go to their Wi-Fi settings menu, where they’ll find the option to set the CS1 up as an AirPlay 2 speaker.

Qobuz only works with Chromecast with an Android device (on mine anyway), but then I can't get it to stream to any DLNA connected device in my LAN so maybe it's the app. The CS1 also has optical and coaxial outputs for sending digital audio at up to 24-bit/192kHz resolution to powered loudspeakers with digital inputs, or to a home theatre receiver or external DAC. Mehldau’s piano was rendered on a wide soundstage that extended beyond and behind the speaker plane.

I woke up in the middle of one night with that niggling question about how the server → endpoint arrangement might be enabled. The internal D/A converter is built around an “advanced differential digital” implementation of a Texas Instruments PCM5141 chip and outputs via a pair of analogue RCA sockets — full MQA decoding and rendering are part of that deal. The CS1 supports the most popular network streaming and casting protocols, including Apple AirPlay 2, Chromecast, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, DLNA, and Roon, so you can control playback with the music apps you use every day. From my understanding, the Uniti Core should appear as a network server via DNLA/UPnP, which the NAD is compliant with (excuse the poor Inglish!

The CS1 is a plain-Jane black box with the same attractively understated styling as NAD’s other Classic-series components, but it’s much smaller than most of them. They have a large collection of LPs and CDs—some recently purchased, and others collected over the years. I still adore the understated, all-business design that dares anyone to disagree with the statement “form follows function. I’ve been listening to the CS1, digital out to the iFi Pro iDSD with a Chord Company Coaxial cable, I’ve used the optical output too. Based on my experiences with NAD products, I would expect the user experience to be well thought out.

I have just bought a NAD CS1 Streaming Endpoint for my son to add streaming to his ‘traditional’ hi-fi. Fortunately the UAPP (USB Audio Player Pro for Android by eXtream Software Development) has UPnP (in addition to USB) integrated now as well. And guess what: neither Paul nor I could hear a meaningful difference between the CS1’s AirPlay stream and the hardwired connection to the Kin Play system through the DragonFly Red. On the back you’ll find everything you need to connect the CS1 to your system, including two digital outputs (optical and coaxial) and one set of analog stereo RCA outputs. When it doesn’t, the app won’t respond to commands, meaning that the only solution is to kill the thread and restart the app until it does work, which may take several attempts.

A single button with a tiny integrated LED is the only visible physical control (though not the only button, which I’ll get to in a moment). I wanted to ask the question first to see if there was a ‘no brainer’ solution, rather than download lots of random apps that may or may not work effectively. The CS1 comes with a rudimentary Quick Setup Guide with an illustration of the package contents, a diagram showing how to connect it to other components, and a QR code for downloading the manual (there’s also a URL that you can enter into your browser). I think the drive is accessible via smb1 so if you can map it in windows and view the files, then yes the upnp software can serve it to the nad as an endpoint. It isn’t a dealbreaker but it would be nice to be able to use the resources on the Uniti Core to feed the NAD CS1. NAD’s affordable CS1 Endpoint Network Streamer lets you add music streaming capability to any stereo or home-theatre system. During the solo passages in the exquisite slow movement, “Spring 2,” it was easy to admire Urioste’s silvery tone and gentle, expressive bowing. This program is month-to-month and will continue until canceled* Coverage for all products ends 30 days after the plan is canceled.
