About this deal

Snap off a piece or lose too many screws and it’s a whole operation to get replacements all the way out here at the edge of the solar system. Dread slowly builds as small, frightening moments inside the Aurora multiply, showcasing Barnes’ patient plotting and steady pacing. I wanted to like this book but the annoying lead character, semi-annoying narrator and other issues blocked my enjoyment of this sci-fi movie mash up. Things are tense from the start, but as the crew discover bodies under beds, people horribly mutilated, messages on the walls, and fragments of messages on the Aurora’s communications system, that tension increases tenfold and fear makes an appearance, and then stays for the duration of the novel.

He is a Scotsman in exile who has lived in London for over two decades and credits discovering SE Hinton and Robert Cormier as a 13-year-old for his huge appetite for books. When Claire was a child, she became the sole survivor of a viral outbreak that killed everyone else in her colony including her mother.A. Barnes a 1/5 as even the ending was lame as it kind of gives everything away in the beginning to then have an annoying chapter format to explain what happened in the past with what’s going on currently. I run my fingers through my hair, the sweat-dampened blond strands sticking to my forehead and hanging in my eyes. As the head of the team, protagonist Claire Kovalik decides to investigate, leading her crew of Voller, Kane, Lourdes, and Nysus onto the ghost ship. Blue eyes that bright are rare these days, outside of old film, and it feels like Kane’s see right through me.

BARNES works in a high school library by day, recommending reads, talking with students, and removing the occasional forgotten cheese stick as bookmark.I was enthralled during the first half of the book, loving the haunted ship and how it was messing with Claire and her crew, as well as how Barnes slowly reveals Claire’s backstory and why she is already perhaps a little unreliable in her own mind in terms of what she thinks she is, or isn’t seeing. Indeed, the first half unfolded beautifully into this awe-inspiring cinematic experience that made me feel like I was watching a movie.

She initially included scenes written from the point of view of the man interviewing Claire, Reed, but chose to eliminate these scenes as "It’s Claire’s story, not his". I have to say up until that point, Dead Silence was pretty much exactly what I’d expected and wanted, as Claire and her crew explored the haunted ship filled with the dead. And if you throw in “Alien” and “Aliens” into this mix, you pretty much have “Dead Silence”, which makes it a familiar but engaging space horror novel.Titanic meets The Shining in this SF horror novel in which a woman and her crew board a decades-lost luxury cruiser and find the wreckage of a nightmare that hasn’t yet ended. She chose to set the novel in space, as "space is just an excellent setting for amping up tension and making the situation more difficult for our characters.

Even though Claire is both a strong and enduring female lead, when she is presented with Ripley’s dilemma, she is terrified but accepts she has to face her demons, even if she is unsure what or who they are. Although it is set in space, the value of salvaging the most famous spaceship in history is a fascinating idea and the characters rightfully spend some page time on discussing this and the monetary value of discovering a vessel as unique as the Titanic or the Marie Celeste.I hang it, along with my helmet, on the peg that’s marked with my name above it on a curling piece of magnetic tape.
