About this deal

It did not, the novel frequently hints at scenarios that could lead to murder or lead to a body, that kind of thing but then these scenarios end up being nothing at all.

One of them is also vehemently against the idea of being a governor at the school and then two pages later is agreeing to the job. Many thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins UK Audio, Avon for allowing me to listen to the ARC of this novel. Our budding Miss Marples are retired teachers who investigate a spate of poison pen letters sent to members of staff at their old school. You couldn't even tell that these women were friends with the way they spoke to each other like strangers. His plays have been produced in theatres across the UK as well as for radio, the most recent being Trust, starring Julie Hesmondhalgh on BBC Radio 4.This mystery finds them, trying to find out who is sending poison pen letters to their friends and neighbours. Retired schoolteachers and amateur sleuths Liz, Pat and Thelma have a brand-new mystery to solve in this witty tale.

I understand that the author was a teacher and therefore there's a connection to the UK school system, but it was so in depth that it was boring. The plot, the characters, the community he’s created is so 3-dimensional and real that I find myself utterly immersed in the story he creates. These wonderfully warm and funny characters took on a life of their own and spawned a series of cosy crime novels. With a few twists to keep us guessing, and I did guess correctly who was writing the letters, but that takes nothing away from a good story. The second instalment in this lovely cosy mystery series, centred around a group of retired primary school teachers, and imbued with admiration for their motivation, resourcefulness and capability. I don’t feel it works particularly well as a standalone book as there are a lot of references to the first book, A Spoonful of Murder, so it helps to have read that book first.
