About this deal

His son, the narrator, discovers hundreds of loose pages strewn around the cottage, that give an idea of the father's fragile mental health, for example, he believes his wife to be still alive. It’s an unusual novel which creates a real sense of place and uses the encroaching natural surroundings to accentuate the narrator’s imploding mental health.

During an anxiety experience, or a panic attack, there’s that feeling of not being able to catch your breath or feeling like you're choking and you just can't control it.Running is letting go of language, stepping into a wordless space where you're free Did you struggle particularly with nerves or anxiety before races? The times of my life when I’m running, I'm happier and healthier, suffer fewer mental health problems. Chris Carse Wilson is an author and lifelong runner who uses exercise and nature to manage his mental health.

The nature of the writing as much a part of the chaotic atmosphere as the depiction of the Scottish Highlands within.

The narrator has now traced their father to this cottage – he’s not there himself, but the place is full of papers and maps written and drawn by his hand. When I sat down and read the final 100 pages in one sitting, I found I connected more with the rhythm and the cadences of the story. An unnamed narrator arrives at an isolated cottage in a remote part of the Scottish Highlands, tracing the last known movements of his father, not long after the death of his mother. Thoughtful, sharp, and deeply considered use of language that is both utterly captivating, and pulls off the trick of being both intense yet surprisingly accessible.

Had the author stopped at that 25% mark, it would’ve been a 4-star story, and nothing much would’ve been lost. I’m trying not to get caught on the breathlessness of a suggestion, the agitation and excitement of that single page, that tiny clue that may mean nothing.

There is a pace to this which the narrator (the son) can accelerate and decelerate to keep the reader guessing and turning the pages.
