Try a sailing holiday around France and Spain

Often overlooked France is in fact one of the largest countries in Europe. It has plenty of attractions to offer visitors around its coastline, making it an excellent destination for a boat or yacht holiday. Spain’s culture, the wonderful climate, the glorious landscape and stunning beaches also offer a very interesting holiday destination. So why not combine the two with a boat trip around the shores of each?

Exploring the coast of France

Exploring the waters around the country provides the chance to take in some impressive locations;

english channelEnglish Channel

So you’re thinking that the English channel doesn’t sound very French, but where better to start your trip then at the head of the country. The English Channel lies to the north of France and the South of the UK. The scenery along this coastline varies from wide sandy beaches to high chalk cliffs. There are plenty of small harbours to stop at in this area, with some of the famous destinations including Calais, Dunkirk, Le Havre, and Dieppe. The River Seine flows into the English Channel and a trip down this famous river will lead all the way to the capital Paris. If you have the time for this, spending a day or more in this city is definitely worth doing to see sights like the Eiffel Tower, Louvre Museum, and Arc de Triomphe.

Bay of Biscay

The Bay of Biscay, is situated to the west of France. This stretch of coastline runs from Brest in the north to the border with Spain in the south and is characterised by broad sandy beaches for much of its length. These are typically quiet, even at the height of the summer season and this makes it easy to find a secluded spot to relax and enjoy the sunshine. There are plenty of small villages to visit in this area and some of the larger ports of call include La Rochelle and Royan.

Mediterranean Sea

The stretch of coast on the Mediterranean Sea is known as the French Riviera and is one of the major yachting destinations in Europe. The area extends from Toulon in the west to the Italian border in the east and several marinas are available between these two points at which to moor. There are a number of impressive and glamorous destinations to visit here, and you could be left wanting for a payday loan in order to cover the cost. These include the seaside resort of Saint-Tropez, the largest city in the area, Nice, and Cannes, which is home to a famous film festival. However, these are only a few of the many beautiful spots to stop at on a trip along the French Riviera.

Moving along to Spain

Spain has always been a hot destination for tourists, particularity the ones who love sailing. For myself personally, Spain has one the best sailing experiences to offer. Sailing in Spain provides the opportunity to uncover a landscape full of glamour and nature, with plenty of sandy beaches and marinas.

Exploring the islands

Sailing vacations in Spain are centred in and around two of the country’s most famed island groups – the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands. Both these islands are equally popular among tourists. It is possible to visit all the islands around this hub in a yacht all day.

The Balearic islands are located in the western region of the Mediterranean sea, off the eastern shores of Spain ‘s mainland. These islands have the best possible weather of all Spain. The Balearic Islands are a preferred holiday destination because of their wonderful climate, rich cultural offers pertaining to Spain and the hospitality by the local people. The island is so heavenly that many of the tourists, who were on their vacation to Spain, made the island their permanent home.

The prominent islands of the Balearic islands are :

  • Ibiza
  • Mallorca
  • Menorca
  • Formentara

The Canaries – Cheep, cheep

The Canary Islands, on the other hand, lie in the Arctic ocean off the western shores of mainland Africa. These islands have been a part of Spain since 1496 and they share the same pleasant climate with persistent mild temperatures all year round. Their splendid fine sandy beaches, their volcanic nature and the hospitable local population make it ideal for tourists, who also get to choose from all sorts of open air, social activities with variety of accommodation and leisure options available to them.

Each of the Canary Islands have different landscapes, which results in a very vivid experience in the region.

All in all, if one is looking for a quality vacation, trying to disconnect from the routine and attempting to revitalize the mind and the body, yachting holidays can be the ideal solution. Spain lives up to its reputation as a splendid yacht destination and it never disappoints, while I think you’ll be surprised at just how awe-inspiring parts of the French coast can be.
